Gabon
In natural resources, Gabon is one of the richest countries in Africa with important deposits of iron and manganese. Its forests have been its chief source of wealth. They have provided high-quality lumber and plywood for more than a hundred years. The forests have extraordinary animal and floral biodiversity (gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants along the river banks) and great points of natural beauty and glamour (waterfalls, cataracts). Because a dense equatorial forest covers 75 % of the country, the government is now trying to develop new ways, other than logging, to use tropical forests.
