Kenya lies on the Indian Ocean coast and forms part of the East African Region. The capital city is Nairobi. Other major towns are Nakuru and Kisumu and the port of Mombasa.

Kenya gained independence from Britain in 1963. Political violence has been experienced since July 1997 after President Daniel Arap Moi refused to make reforms before the December elections, which he won. Kenya has a free market economy with an active stock exchange. Tourism plays an important role in the economy and is one of the country's most important sources of foreign exchange. Kenya is known for its safaris, it has 15 national parks that house wild animals. Kenya also depends on agriculture, which employs a large part of the population. The country is one of the world’s largest tea exporters.

English is the official language of communication but Swahili is widely spoken.

The local currency is the Kenya shilling (KSh).

In the early 1900s, the Masai population lost their power when the British government forced them away to distant southern Kenya and Tanzania. The Masai, most of whom are nomads who herd their cattle across the highlands of Kenya, live in kraals, small clusters of circular cow-dung huts constructed by the women. Today the Masai number approximately 250,000 and remain a pastoral people. They still treasure extraordinary tribal customs, and traditions remain unaffected by the pressures of the fast-expanding evolution of modern world.

More than two dozen national parks fall within Kenya's borders, making it the most popular safari destination in Africa. The reserves are famous for their great concentration of the rare and wild species of animals found in northern Kenya. The wildlife-- which includes elephants, giraffes, lions, rhinoceroses, and zebras-- attracts thousands of tourists to Kenya each year. Because of their large population in reserves and parcs, Zebras in Kenya are part of the everyday decor.

In Mombassa, steeled elephant tusks can be seen across the main road. Elephants are the symbol of the city. Kenya is known for its famous safaris expeditions. The picture shows the perfect symmetry and concordance that caracterizes Kenya and makes it one of the most enjoyable tourist experiences in Africa. A visitor automatically feels him/herself embraced and hugged by the typical Kenyan hospitality and serenity that the tusks symbolize.
